Florida state authorities have filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and its CEO Sam Altman, accusing the ChatGPT developer of misleading users regarding the platform's safety for children. This was reported by Reuters, according to UNN.

Details

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier stated that ChatGPT allegedly provided information to potential school shooters, offered advice on self-harm, and contributed to addiction among young users. According to him, the state became the first in the U.S. to file a lawsuit against OpenAI.

"People are suffering, parents are being deceived, and they must pay for it,"

Uthmeier said.

The lawsuit also mentions instances where users who interacted with ChatGPT subsequently committed acts of violence. The prosecutor emphasized that he personally included Sam Altman in the list of defendants because he played a "key role" in promoting service features that state authorities consider dangerous.

The lawsuit seeks compensation from the company that could reach billions of dollars, as well as a requirement to change the mechanisms of ChatGPT's interaction with minor users. OpenAI has not yet commented on the lawsuit; however, the company has previously stated that its models are trained to reject requests that could promote violence, and in cases of real threat, information is passed to law enforcement.
