F-16 fighter jets will arrive in Ukraine within the next few weeks. However, as Ukrainian and Western officials warn, although these aircraft were previously considered capable of changing the balance of power, their impact on the course of hostilities may not be immediate. This was reported by the Washington Post.
Despite the arrival of F-16 fighters in Ukraine in the coming weeks, their number does not seem to be sufficient to affect the course of the fighting, as Russian air defense systems have the ability to shoot them down. The first F-16s are expected to be used primarily to bolster Ukraine's air defense, focusing on intercepting missiles, drones, and enemy aircraft rather than conducting ground attacks near the front line.
Officials noted that the incoming planes will not initially operate close to the front line, raising doubts about their ability to deter enemy air attacks.
Belgium, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Norway have promised to provide Ukraine with 80 F-16 fighter jets, but most of them will arrive only in a few years. The United States, which authorized the transfer of aircraft from NATO allies last summer, has not provided or promised any aircraft.
The number of aircraft that Kyiv will receive this year will not exceed one squadron, or about 20 aircraft, and only six pilots will complete their training this summer due to limitations and delays in the program.
The limited role of the F-16s underscores the growing differences between Kyiv and its Western allies. U.S. officials have long argued that the F-16s are unlikely to give Ukraine a significant advantage because of Russia's strong air defense. In response, Ukrainian officials have repeatedly said that Western aid comes too late and is insufficient.
Recall
The Netherlands has authorized the export of 24 F-16 fighter jets. The first of them will soon be delivered to Ukraine. A letter to this effect was published by the House of Representatives.
