On Monday, January 27, the Danish Ministry of Defense announced that the government and leading Danish political parties have announced an agreement to increase defense investments in the Arctic and North Atlantic by 14.6 billion Danish kroner (more than $2 billion). This was reported by UNN with reference to the Danish Defense Ministry.
Details
A political agreement between the Danish government and parliament provides for the allocation of more than $2 billion to strengthen the military presence, primarily in the Arctic.
It is noted that three new Arctic ships, additional long-range drones with enhanced imaging capabilities, and enhanced satellite capabilities are some of the initiatives of the first partial Arctic and North Atlantic agreement that the government and the parties to the defense agreement agreed on in close cooperation with the Faroe Islands government and the Naalakkersuisut of Greenland.
We face serious security policy challenges. According to the Military Intelligence Service, the threat level in the Arctic and North Atlantic has worsened. Therefore, we must significantly increase the presence of the Armed Forces in the regions. We are doing this through this partial agreement, which was created in close cooperation with the government of the Faroe Islands and the Greenlandic organization Naalakkersuisut. The agreement lays the groundwork for us to build on in the first half of 2025
In addition, the parties also agreed to strengthen cooperation in intelligence and research, and to modernize Arctic Command facilities so that the Armed Forces can operate in a safer environment, as well as to increase staffing levels to meet the growing number of tasks related to, among other things, surveillance, sovereignty assertion, allied support, and search and rescue in the Arctic and North Atlantic.

Trump emphasizedthat he sees Greenland's future as part of the United States, noting that it is in the interest of “protecting the free world.” The newly elected president emphasized that only America can guarantee freedom to the island's residents, while Denmark, according to him, is not able to provide similar opportunities.
