In a statement ahead of his meeting with US President Joe Biden next week, Kishida Fumio said that Japan would change its defense posture.

As we witness Russia's aggression against Ukraine, the ongoing situation in the Middle East, and the situation in East Asia, we are facing a historic turning point. That is why Japan has decided to fundamentally strengthen its defense capabilities, and we have significantly changed Japan's security policy on these fronts,

The Prime Minister noted that in the face of growing security challenges, the Japan-U.S. alliance is becoming "increasingly important.

The publication notes that the Kishida-Biden summit was characterized by Washington as a historic opportunity for the two countries to modernize their alliance, as both countries see regional threats ranging from North Korea's weapons tests and growing relations with Russia to China's aggression in the South China Sea and against Taiwan.
