The election of an interim mayor does not allow the government to appoint a trustee to manage the municipality. This is reported by UNN with reference to BBC, AFP, Reuters.

Details

After Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu was imprisoned on bribery charges, which he and his supporters deny, the municipal council of Turkey's largest city elected an interim mayor. It should be noted that the Istanbul municipal council includes political forces opposed to Turkish President Erdoğan.

The 314-member Istanbul Council, where the CHP has a majority, elected Nuri Aslan from the party to govern the city with 177 votes.

Mass rallies continue, US administration expresses concern

A week after demonstrations began in Turkey against the imprisonment of popular Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, the Turkish opposition is calling for expanded protests to increase pressure on President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

In every city we come to, we will hold the biggest rallies in their history

- said CHP party leader Özgür Özel in an interview with the British broadcaster BBC.

Özel said that the protests would continue until early presidential elections were announced or until İmamoğlu was released from prison.

The Donald Trump administration in the US expressed concern over İmamoğlu's arrest and mass protests in Turkey. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed to his Turkish counterpart Hakan Fidan "his concern about recent arrests and demonstrations in Turkey," a US State Department spokeswoman said.

Economic difficulties amid continued protests

After İmamoğlu's detention, Turkish financial assets fell, prompting the central bank to use reserves to support the lira. The government said the impact of the fluctuations would be limited and temporary.

Central Bank Governor Fatih Karahan said on Wednesday that the bank had taken active measures to ensure the effective functioning of markets and that these measures support its tight monetary policy. He said that the shocks had not disrupted the underlying dynamics of the economy.

Istanbul University announced that the academic degree of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu - the main political rival of the president of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan - has been revoked due to violations.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said that protests over the imprisonment of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu have become a "movement of violence" and that the opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) he leads will be held accountable for injuring police officers and damaging property.

During protests against the arrest of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, 1133 people were detained, including ten journalists.
