The Scottish government is planning to ban the use of WhatsApp and other non-corporate messengers on work phones from spring 2024. The decision was made after an external audit and a scandal with deleted messages during the pandemic.

The Scottish government will stop using WhatsApp on work phones after the announcement of the results of an external audit. This was reported by Sky News, according to UNN.

Details

It is noted that starting next spring, all “non-corporate mobile messaging applications” will be removed from the work phones of Scottish government officials. This ban will apply to all messengers that are not used for official government communication - not only WhatsApp, but also Signal and Facebook Messenger.

As a reminder, the Scottish government ordered an audit of messenger use in January 2024 as part of an assessment of the “openness and transparency” of its activities. The audit was preceded by criticism of Scottish officials over obscene messages on WhatsApp, which was widely used during the coronavirus pandemic.

At the same time, some officials admitted to deleting messages written during the pandemic.

In Ukraine, the National Security and Defense Council announced a ban on Telegram on the official devices of civil servants, military and critical infrastructure workers. The decision was made due to threats to national security associated with the use of the messenger during the war.
