Test strips for people with type II diabetes on insulin therapy have been included in the "Affordable Medicines" program

The government has decided to expand the reimbursement program for test strips for measuring blood glucose levels. Starting in September 2026, patients with type II diabetes who require insulin therapy will be able to receive them free of charge. Until now, test strips under the medical guarantees program were only available to patients with type I diabetes — reimbursement of such medical devices for this group of patients has been in effect since 2023. This was reported by the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, writes UNN.

Starting in September, the program will also cover people with type II diabetes who are receiving insulin therapy.

It is noted that regular measurement of glucose levels is an important part of safe treatment for patients using insulin. Self-monitoring helps to timely detect excessive decreases or increases in blood sugar levels, adjust therapy, and prevent the development of acute and long-term complications of diabetes.

Addition

"Affordable Medicines" is a state reimbursement program under which patients can receive necessary medicines and medical devices free of charge or with a partial co-payment using an electronic prescription. Their cost is reimbursed to pharmacies by the National Health Service of Ukraine within the framework of the Medical Guarantees Program.

To receive medicines or medical devices under the program, a patient must contact the appropriate doctor, obtain an electronic prescription, and present it at a pharmacy that has a contract with the NHSU.
