SBU investigates possible involvement of Russia in cyberattack on Kyivstar: proceedings opened - SBU

The SBU opened a criminal investigation into the cyberattack on Kyivstar, suspecting Russia of involvement. The attack led to problems with mobile communications and Internet access.

The Security Service of Ukraine has opened a criminal investigation into a cyberattack on one of the national mobile operators Kyivstar. The agency does not rule out that Russian special services may be behind the attack. UNN reports this with reference to the SBU. 

Details 

The proceedings were opened over the cyberattack on Kyivstar under eight articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.

 In particular, these are:

- Art. 361 (unauthorized interference with the operation of information (automated), electronic communication, information and communication systems, electronic communication networks);

- Art. 361-1 (creation for the purpose of illegal use, distribution or sale of malicious software or hardware, as well as their distribution or sale);

- Art. 110 (encroachment on the territorial integrity and inviolability of Ukraine);

- Art. 111 (high treason);

- Art. 113 (sabotage);

- Art. 437 (planning, preparation, unleashing and waging of aggressive war);

- Art. 438 (violation of the laws and customs of war);

- Art. 255 (creation, leadership of a criminal community or criminal organization, as well as participation in it).

One of the versions currently being investigated by SBU investigators is that Russian special services may be behind the hacker attack

After the hacker attack was reported, an SBU investigative team arrived at the company's offices to document all the circumstances of the incident.

Also at the scene , SBU cyber specialists  are assisting Kyivstar employees and coordinating the efforts of all government agencies to restore the network as soon as possible.

Addendum

Specialists of the State Service for Special Communications and Information Protection are also investigating the incident of a hacker attack on the network of Kyivstar mobile operator. [As a reminder, Kyivstar 

said 

that a technical failure caused problems with access to mobile communications and the Internet. "Kyivstar explained the large-scale outage as a result of a powerful hacker attack.
