Estonia became the first country in the former Soviet Union to legalize same-sex marriage. In June, the Riigikogu - the Estonian parliament - voted in favor of the decision.
However, the law came into force on Monday, January 1, and from the New Year, same-sex couples will be able to register their marriage applications online.
Social Welfare Minister Signe Riisalo (Reform) said that the move put an end to years of legal confusion and ensured a sense of security and equal rights for all Estonians.
AddendumAddendum
Homosexuality was decriminalized in 1991, when Estonia emerged from Soviet rule. However, discrimination and violence continue to exist in the country.
At the same time, polls show that the perception of same-sex marriage in Estonia has changed in recent years
In a survey conducted this year by the Estonian Center for Human Rights, 53% of Estonians supported same-sex marriage. Ten years ago, the number was only 34%.
Recall
Poland's new government believes that the country should legalize same-sex partnerships. This is also demanded by the ECHR, which ruled that Poland violated the right to private and family life by denying same-sex couples any form of legal recognition and protection.
