Microsoft Corporation planned to generate approximately $92 billion in profit from its early investments in OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT. This is evidenced by internal company documents released during the legal proceedings in Elon Musk's lawsuit against OpenAI and Microsoft, Bloomberg reports, according to UNN.

The documents were presented in federal court in Oakland, California. During the hearings, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella stated that the company "took a risk" by investing in OpenAI's development well before the explosive growth of the artificial intelligence market.
Microsoft's investments have surged in value
By early 2023, Microsoft had invested approximately $13 billion in OpenAI. Since then, the valuation of the ChatGPT developer has skyrocketed. As of late March 2026, OpenAI was valued at $852 billion.
According to Bloomberg, as of October last year, Microsoft's stake in the startup was valued at approximately $135 billion.
Musk's lawsuit against OpenAI
The legal process concerns a lawsuit filed by Elon Musk in 2024. The businessman accused OpenAI co-founders Sam Altman and Greg Brockman of deviating from the company's original non-profit mission.

In Musk's view, OpenAI was created as an organization "for the benefit of humanity," but later transformed into a commercial business. He also claims that Microsoft facilitated this transformation through large-scale investments and partnership.
OpenAI and Microsoft deny the allegations
Microsoft, OpenAI, as well as Sam Altman and Greg Brockman, reject all allegations. They state that Musk's lawsuit is an attempt to promote his own artificial intelligence startup, xAI, which the billionaire launched in 2023.
The Bloomberg report notes that disputes have recently arisen between Microsoft and OpenAI regarding the terms of their partnership, and the companies have gradually begun to compete with each other in certain areas of AI development.
Last year, as part of OpenAI's restructuring, Microsoft received a 27% stake in the company.
