Details

"A 56-year-old surgeon from the polytrauma department of the Kyiv City Clinical Emergency Hospital has been notified of suspicion. He is suspected of improper performance of professional duties, which caused serious consequences for the patient (Part 1 of Article 140 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine)," the statement reads.

It was established that a 43-year-old serviceman went to the emergency hospital with a closed rib fracture, which he sustained during his leave in the capital.

"After an examination, the surgeon performed an X-ray on him and recommended outpatient treatment with a family doctor. After his leave ended, the serviceman returned to his place of duty, but died a few days later in a local hospital," the prosecutor's office noted.

As stated by the prosecutor's office, during the pre-trial investigation, "it was established that at the capital's hospital, a fracture of another rib was missed in the patient because a chest X-ray was performed in one projection instead of the required two."

"The presence of the injury obligated the doctor to prescribe additional examinations, in particular, a chest X-ray in a lateral projection, a computed tomography of the chest organs, and a pleural cavity puncture. However, this was not done, which led to the patient's death," the prosecutor's office stated.

The sanction of the article provides for punishment in the form of restriction of liberty for up to five years or imprisonment for up to three years, with deprivation of the right to hold certain positions or engage in certain activities for up to three years.
