The Christmas market in Magdeburg was closed earlier than planned due to a terrorist attack that killed 5 people and injured more than 200. An attacker in a BMW broke through concrete blocks, and security flaws were discovered.

In Magdeburg, they began dismantling the Christmas market ahead of schedule after the terrorist attack on December 20, UNN reports citing BILD.

Details

Five people were killed and more than 200 injured in the attack. Instead of the planned closure on December 23, the market closed immediately after the incident, and employees began dismantling trade pavilions and attractions.

The attack was carried out by 50-year-old Taleb Al-Abdulmohsen, who drove a BMW into the crowd, crossing concrete blocks. Interior Ministry officials explained that the distance between the blocks was six meters, which allowed the attacker to bypass the barriers. The current security plan is being tested.

The Minister of the Interior demands to find out why metal chains were not used between the concrete blocks to prevent the car from passing.

The police are also investigating mistakes made by the police: one of the patrol cars was not at the planned location, which could also have affected the efficiency of law enforcement.
