The detained man, whose photo Trump posted online, is a man around 30 years old from California, two law enforcement officials told NBC. He is believed to have been a hotel guest.
According to police, the gunman was armed with a shotgun, pistol, and several knives.
One police officer was wounded but saved by his bulletproof vest, Trump said.
Trump called the gunman a "lone assassin" when he returned to the White House shortly after the incident for a press conference.
The U.S. President said he initially thought the shots came from a falling tray. His wife Melania later told him it sounded like an unpleasant noise.
The suspect will appear in federal court on Monday.
