Today, on the last Saturday of April, all pet owners can thank the people who support the life and health of their pets and join the celebration of World Veterinary Day, UNN writes.

It is believed that the first veterinarians appeared in ancient Egypt. Back then, priests were engaged in treating animals.

In Ancient Rome, veterinary medicine was developed to a more advanced level because it was important to the state. A large regular army needed a lot of healthy and hardy horses,  so the Roman army had veterinarians and hospitals for sick animals.

In 1762, following another massive plague of livestock in France, veterinary surgeon Claude Bourget opened the world's first veterinary college. Soon after, similar educational institutions opened in Sweden, Denmark, and Germany.

On the territory of modern Ukraine, the first veterinary school was opened in Kharkiv in 1851.

Until the middle of the twentieth century, veterinary medicine mostly specialized in domestic animals. Over the years, however, dogs, cats, parrots, hamsters, rats, parrots, etc. became the main patients of veterinarians.

On April 27, we can celebrate an event dedicated to an invention that made life easier for parents and babies - on this day in 1965, Procter & Gamble received a patent for disposable diapers.

The "father" of the invention was Victor Mills, a company employee who had three grandchildren. They were the first in the world to use disposable diapers.

Procter & Gamble recognized the invention of their employee. However, it took the company a few more years to find the best materials for diaper production.

They went on sale under the Pampers brand and became so popular that many people still call disposable diapers from other manufacturers "pampers".

On April 27, 1791, Samuel Morse was born, who invented a way to transmit information quickly after a personal tragedy.

In 1825, when Morse was on another trip, he received a message that his wife was seriously ill. He rushed home, but did not have time - when he arrived, his wife had already died.

Grief-stricken, Morse decided to invent a fast way to transmit information so that such stories would not be repeated in the life of any person.

He devoted 13 years to this work, which resulted in the electromagnetic telegraph and the dot-dash cipher we all know as Morse code.

Today is also World Sense of Smell Day. The event was founded in 1988 by George Dodd, a scientist, perfumer, aromatherapist, and scent expert.

The man has made a long career path from studying molecular chemistry and biology to founding the world's first scent biotechnology company. He believes that the sense of smell can and should be trained. To this end, he worked on developing training kits for blind children to at least partially compensate for their lost vision.

Today you can still join the International Donor Conception Awareness Day.

The event aims to highlight the various ways of creating a family, especially in circumstances such as medical infertility, chromosomal disorders and other reasons. It also aims to break down the shame and secrecy of donor conception, highlight the lifelong experiences of people conceived from donors, and advocate for the rights of egg donors to accurate medical information.

April 27 is also World Design Day, which was established to emphasize how design enriches our lives in countless ways, often unbeknownst to us.

In Ukraine, on April 27, employees of HR departments of institutions and enterprises celebrate their unofficial professional holiday.

Today, animal rights activists and wildlife lovers can join the International Day for the Protection of Marine Mammals and World Tapir Day.

According to the church calendar, today is the Day of Remembrance of the Apostle Simeon from the 70th century.

Simeon is called the nephew of the Virgin Mary's husband Joseph.

Simeon joined the disciples of Christ in his adult years. He was a preacher and theologian. He became Bishop of Jerusalem after the execution of the Apostle James.

During the intensification of the persecution of Christians, by order of the ruler of Jerusalem, the centenarian Simeon was captured and crucified on a cross.

On April 27, Semen, Serhii, Stepan, Anastasiia, and Mariia celebrate their name days.
