The US Space Development Agency (SDA) has awarded L3Harris Technologies a contract worth almost $1 billion to build satellites that will strengthen the missile tracking line above Earth, a key element of US President Donald Trump's "Golden Dome" defense shield, UNN reports with reference to Bloomberg.
Details
The $843 million contract for 18 satellites is an addition to two previous orders for 34 systems that began as an experimental development for the US Missile Defense Agency (MDA) just a few years ago.
L3Harris was initially selected to build a set of four satellites as part of the US Missile Defense Agency's program to create space sensors for tracking hypersonic and ballistic missiles. The company launched the first set into orbit in February 2024.
The space agency is creating a constellation of satellites in low Earth orbit that can detect hard-to-detect hypersonic missiles, as well as ballistic missiles.
