The Trump administration's decision to increase economic pressure on Tehran aims to force the Iranian regime to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and make concessions on its nuclear program. It will also allow the US to take control of Iranian-linked vessels, including those carrying Iranian oil and located outside the Persian Gulf and transporting weapons.
The US Treasury Department on Wednesday expanded the list of sanctioned vessels, companies, and individuals to increase pressure on illegal Iranian oil trade.
General Dan Kane, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, stated that the US would actively pursue any vessel under the Iranian flag or attempting to provide support to Iran. According to him, this would apply to vessels of the shadow fleet carrying Iranian oil.
