Guterres emphasized that Russia's recent attacks on May 23 and 24, as well as the prospects of further strikes, indicate a critical moment in the development of the conflict.
"The current course is not sustainable. This trajectory must be changed,"
According to the UN Secretary-General, a further intensification of hostilities could lead to unpredictable consequences.
"What is needed now is de-escalation – immediate and sustained. What is needed now is a full and unconditional ceasefire,"
The UN also noted that in the first four months of 2026, the number of civilian casualties in Ukraine exceeded the figures for the same period last year. According to the organization, from January to April, 815 civilians were killed and another 4,174 were injured. Since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion, the deaths of over 15,000 civilians have been confirmed, including nearly 800 children.
