Trump's statements on Greenland add urgency to the process of forming Denmark's government. Mette Frederiksen is strengthening her influence in the third week of coalition meetings.

Acting Prime Minister of Denmark Mette Frederiksen enters the third week of coalition talks with a stronger position after the US again put pressure on Greenland and amid internal disagreements between rival parties, writes UNN with reference to Bloomberg.

Details

Frederiksen's Social Democrats will continue talks on Tuesday with left-wing parties and the centrist Moderates party amid new comments from Donald Trump regarding the semi-autonomous Danish territory.

On Monday, the US President reiterated his desire to take control of Greenland, stating that the dispute over the island is the basis of his dissatisfaction with NATO. These statements added additional urgency to the negotiations on forming a functioning government, which could potentially play into Frederiksen's hands after two weeks of talks without progress, the publication writes.

"Trump has mentioned Greenland again, and we are in a serious situation," Pelle Dragsted, head of the Red-Green Alliance, told the press before his meeting with Frederiksen on Tuesday in Copenhagen. "I would like us to quickly form a government that can defend the interests of the Kingdom of Denmark."

Frederiksen's position has also been strengthened by disagreements within the right-wing opposition bloc after three MPs left their parties, weakening her rivals and potentially easing the path to an agreement, the publication notes.

Addition

Last month's elections in Denmark led to a fragmented parliament, leaving Frederiksen without a clear majority and a difficult path to retaining power. Since then, Frederiksen has been holding bilateral talks with center-left allies, centrist and center-right parties, as well as MPs from Greenland and the Faroe Islands.

After the previous elections in 2022, it took 42 days to form a government in Denmark.
