Ukraine celebrates the 34th anniversary of the Declaration of State Sovereignty, the first document on the path to independence adopted by the Verkhovna Rada on July 16, 1990.

Today, on July 16, Ukraine celebrates the 34th anniversary of the Declaration of State Sovereignty, the first document on the path to the declaration of independence of our country, UNN reports.

In March 1990, Lithuania became the first Soviet republic to declare its independence from the ussr. Preparations for such steps were underway in Latvia and Estonia.

On June 12, 1990, even the russian republic within the soviet union declared its state sovereignty.

Under public pressure, on July 16, 1990, the Verkhovna Rada of the Ukrainian SSR adopted the Declaration of State Sovereignty.

"355 deputies voted in favor, 4 voted against, one abstained, and the rest did not vote.

The Declaration stated that the Ukrainian SSR was a sovereign national state and that the people were the only source of power.

The document also enshrined the right to its own currency; its own customs and tax systems, state budget; and its own armed forces.

They also declared the right to their own citizenship.

12 drafts of the Declaration of State Sovereignty of Ukraine were prepared.

Interestingly, even before the adoption of the Declaration, in June 1990, the Communist Party of Ukraine even adopted a resolution "On the State Sovereignty of the Ukrainian SSR.

On the day of the adoption of the Declaration, the Verkhovna Rada adopted a separate resolution to consider July 16 as the Day of Declaration of Independence of Ukraine.

After the adoption of the Act of Independence of Ukraine on August 24, 1991, which was confirmed in a referendum on December 1 of the same year, the Verkhovna Rada repealed this resolution on February 20, 1992.
