Europe’s electricity system remains stable despite the heat and drought affecting the operation of energy infrastructure in some countries. This is stated on the European Commission’s website, UNN reports.

Experts from the European Commission, EU countries, Ukraine, Moldova, the Energy Community Secretariat, and the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity (ENTSO-E) held a special meeting of the Electricity Coordination Group. Participants discussed security of electricity supply amid extreme weather conditions.

Following the meeting, the group confirmed the absence of short-term risks to the adequacy of the electricity system. At the same time, the situation is expected to remain strained over the next week.

Electricity generation has declined in some EU countries due to low water levels or high water temperatures. At the same time, coordination between countries and the functioning of the single electricity market make it possible to direct electricity to the regions where it is most needed.

Solar generation is helping the energy system

High levels of solar power generation significantly helped reduce pressure on prices during the central hours of the day. However, the European Commission emphasized the need to further develop energy storage systems, which will make it possible to use surplus solar generation during the evening peak in consumption.

The meeting participants separately noted the effectiveness of voluntary measures to reduce electricity demand in some EU countries. In particular, in Hungary, such measures helped the energy system maintain balance under conditions of high load.

ENTSO-E also informed the Coordination Group about transmission system operators’ preparations for the solar eclipse on August 12. During the astronomical event, a temporary reduction in solar power generation is expected, requiring additional coordination of energy system operations.

The European Commission will continue to monitor the situation in European countries, coordinate the necessary actions, and maintain regular contact with the EU member states, ENTSO-E, and the Energy Community Secretariat.
