Russia continues a coordinated disinformation campaign against Ukraine in the context of the FIFA World Cup, spreading another fake video report disguised as material from a Western media outlet aimed at discrediting Ukrainian fans. This was reported by the Center for Countering Disinformation of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine (CCD), according to UNN.
Pro-Russian resources are circulating a fake video claiming that Ukrainian fans allegedly carried out a violent attack on Israelis after the first match of the World Cup, resulting in 20 Israeli citizens being injured,
This plant is presented as if it were a video report by the Canadian television network CTV News. However, no such material exists on the media outlet's official resources. There is also no confirmation from the World Cup organizers or official representatives of the Ukrainian delegation regarding the "unlawful behavior of Ukrainian fans."
Falsifying reports from well-known Western media is a long-established tactic of Russian propaganda. In particular, it is systematically used by the "Matryoshka" disinformation network, which specializes in forging videos and news under the brands of authoritative international information resources and organizations. The idea of the fake itself is not new: specifically, Russian propaganda actively launched various plants about Ukrainians during the 2024 Olympics.
The CCD noted that the goal of such a disinformation campaign is to create a negative image of Ukrainians as a "dysfunctional community" and to discredit Ukraine on the international stage.
