Turkey's chief ombudsman says Russia ignores requests to visit Ukrainian prisoners of war. Turkey plans to appeal to the UN if it does not receive a response from Russia.

Russia ignores Turkey's requests to visit Ukrainian prisoners of war held in Russia. Turkish Chief Ombudsman Şeref Malkoç stated this at a meeting with relatives of Ukrainian prisoners of war, QIRIM.News reports, UNN writes.

Details

Malkoc recalled that in March of this year he paid a visit to Ukraine. According to him, after that he wanted to go to Russia to visit Ukrainian prisoners of war in Russia.

For this reason, we held an online meeting with the Russian Ombudsman Tatyana Moskalkova and wrote a letter, but we did not receive any results. In this regard, I wrote a letter to the Russian Embassy in Ankara on July 5, 2024. In the letter, I mentioned my visit to Ukraine, my visit to Russian prisoners of war in Ukraine. And I also told them that I want to visit Ukrainian prisoners of war in Russia

The Turkish Ombudsman noted that he had informed Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan about this problem and asked for his support in this matter.

Malcoche stressed that will wait for a response from Russia for some time, and if it does not, he will appeal to the Secretary General of the United Nations (UN).

Addendum

The wife of a Ukrainian prisoner of war , Larysa Salaeva , stated that Russia does not adhere to any international conventions, including the Geneva Convention.

Thus, the occupiers do not allow Ukrainian prisoners of war to communicate with their relatives, and their families cannot receive information about the condition of prisoners of war and their conditions of detention.

We must do everything possible now. We must use every chance. Because during the last exchange of military bodies, Russia returned to Ukraine corpses with signs of torture. In fact, some of the returned bodies were missing internal organs

- The wife of the Ukrainian defender is confident.

At the end of the meeting, relatives of Ukrainian prisoners of war handed over an updated list of Mariupol defenders held in Russian captivity to the Turkish Ombudsman.
