In the Sumy region, a pre-trial investigation has been launched into the detonation of a grenade by a man who turned out to be a former serviceman, resulting in injuries to five people, including three police officers, the National Police reported, according to UNN.

The incident occurred on May 10 at approximately 5:30 p.m. in one of the catering establishments in the city of Okhtyrka.
The police received a report about a man in a cafe carrying a grenade and threatening customers. Police units from the Okhtyrka District Police Department immediately arrived at the scene.
Preliminary findings indicate that law enforcement officers located the man near the establishment and began negotiations with him to prevent danger to citizens. During the interaction, the man threw the grenade on the ground, causing an explosion.
As a result of the explosion, five people were injured: three police officers, a civilian man, and the perpetrator himself. All victims were taken to a medical facility. They are receiving the necessary assistance. Their condition is currently reported as stable.

As indicated, criminal proceedings have been initiated under: Art. 348 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (encroachment on the life of a law enforcement officer); Part 2 of Art. 15, paragraphs 1, 5, 7 of Part 2 of Art. 115 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (attempted intentional murder); Part 4 of Art. 296 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (hooliganism); Part 1 of Art. 263 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (illegal handling of munitions).
"The suspect has been detained in accordance with Art. 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine. The issue of serving him a notice of suspicion is being resolved," the statement reads.
An investigative-operational group, explosives experts, forensic specialists, and medics worked at the scene. Investigative actions are ongoing.
