Pentagon spokesman Air Force Major General Patrick Ryder told reporters on Tuesday that three servicemen had already recovered. Eight servicemen were treated for head injuries and smoke poisoning.
The United States says its 900 troops in Syria and 2,500 in neighboring Iraq are instructing and assisting local forces trying to prevent the resurgence of the Islamic State, which seized large swaths of territory in both countries in 2014 but was later driven back. Ryder added that the United States believes the attack was carried out by Iranian-backed forces, but the Pentagon is working to determine who exactly.
