Polish President Karol Nawrocki may make a decision regarding the Order of the White Eagle awarded to Volodymyr Zelenskyy within the coming days. This is reported by Rzeczpospolita, according to UNN.
Details
It is noted that the Presidential Center, in both official and unofficial comments, claims that the pause in Nawrocki's decision and the non-disclosure of recommendations are part of a deliberately created "window of opportunity" for the Ukrainian side on this issue.
By giving the Ukrainians time, the president also wants to demonstrate that he does not act emotionally in international affairs, an accusation leveled against him by politicians from Poland's ruling camp. However, the time granted to the Ukrainian side... is not limitless. And it is more a matter of days than weeks
It is indicated that Warsaw has identified only one option that could convince the president not to strip Zelenskyy of the order: changing the name of the military unit "named after the Heroes of the UPA" to something else. At the same time, those close to Nawrocki have no doubt that public opinion in Poland on this issue is on the president's side.
Context
At the end of May, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy granted one of the units of the Special Operations Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine the name "after the Heroes of the UPA."
Following this, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated that the decision to name the Ukrainian SOF unit "after the Heroes of the UPA" causes concern regarding bilateral relations and touches upon historical sensitivities, adding that it "unnecessarily brings the issue of historical differences back to a rather alarming level."
Subsequently, Polish President Karol Nawrocki stated that he takes a critical view of the Ukrainian President's decision and believes that Zelenskyy should be stripped of the Polish Order of the White Eagle.
