On the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Lima, Peru, Biden, South Korean President Yun Suk-yeol and Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba held a joint meeting. The three countries announced the creation of a Trilateral Secretariat to formalize the relationship and make sure it is not just "a series of meetings," National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan told reporters.
It is noted that Biden sees the close ties between the three countries as a defense against China's aggressive steps in the region, which Beijing denies.

According to a joint statement released after the meeting, the three countries also committed to further developing cooperation with the Philippines in a number of important sectors, including ports, energy, and transportation.
