The Prosecutor General's Office of the Russian Federation is asking the Supreme Court to consider the issue of suspending the ban on the Islamist movement "Taliban" on the territory of the Russian Federation. This was reported by Russian propaganda media, reports UNN.

Details

The Russian Supreme Court will consider this issue on April 17 of this year behind closed doors. The issue of excluding the "Taliban" from the Russian register of terrorist organizations was raised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Justice of the Russian Federation.

The radical Islamist movement "Taliban" (translated from Arabic as "students") originated in Afghanistan in the mid-1990s. The founders of the organization are part of the Afghan Mujahideen - participants in the war with Soviet troops. In 1996, the Taliban captured Kabul and most of Afghanistan, which they ruled until September 2001.

After September 11, 2001, and the introduction of US and NATO troops into Afghanistan, the Taliban began a guerrilla war with the international military coalition ISAF, as well as with Afghan government troops. In late August - early September 2021, the Taliban seized power in Afghanistan for the second time.

This movement was recognized as terrorists by the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation in 2003.
