Hungary's next leader will not hinder funding for Ukraine after Orbán's resignation. Budapest will only maintain its refusal to participate in the loan itself.

Hungary's next leader, Péter Magyar, has stated that he will not obstruct Ukraine's receipt of a 90 billion euro European Union loan, which was blocked by outgoing Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, UNN reports with reference to Bloomberg.

Magyar stated at a press conference in Budapest on Monday that his country would maintain its refusal to financially participate in the loan.

Brussels wants to act quickly to release the loan after Orbán's convincing defeat in Sunday's elections, which ended his 16-year tenure. Cyprus, which holds the EU presidency and sets many political priorities, will raise the issue as soon as possible at a meeting of the bloc's ambassadors, according to a Cypriot official.

EU seeks to unblock €90 billion loan for Ukraine after Orban's defeat - Bloomberg13.04.26, 15:07

Orbán made hostility towards Ukraine a central element of his failed re-election bid. He initially approved the critical loan in December along with other EU leaders. But he later changed course, blaming a blocked oil pipeline in Ukraine, which was damaged by a Russian drone strike. Approval of the funding requires unanimity among the 27 member states.
