The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Hungary, Péter Szijjártó, once again accused Ukraine of oppressing the rights of the Hungarian minority in Zakarpattia, stating that his country will not allow Ukraine to join the European Union until the issue is resolved. The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Hungary, Péter Szijjártó, stated that despite constant promises, Ukraine has not returned the rights of minorities in the Zakarpattia region, which were taken away from the Hungarian community since 2015.
Today I had a telephone conversation with my new Austrian colleague regarding the ongoing violations of the rights of the Hungarian community in Zakarpattia. I highly appreciate Beate Meinl-Reisinger's willingness to help, but the situation remains unchanged.
He also noted that "the Ukrainian government, despite constant promises and pleasant words, has not returned the rights of minorities taken from the Hungarian community since 2015."
"This is unacceptable and completely contrary to common European rules and values. Thus, as long as this sad situation persists, there can be no progress on negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the EU," Szijjártó wrote.
