From "Avengers" with Downey Jr. to "Top Gun 3" - Hollywood studios announced new films at CinemaCon

At CinemaCon, the trailer for the new Avengers was presented, Top Gun 3 was announced, a sequel to The Social Network, and Val Kilmer's return with the help of AI.

Some of the most anticipated films of the next few years were presented at the annual CinemaCon film industry gathering in Las Vegas this week, UNN reports with reference to the BBC.

The event gives fans and cinema owners a glimpse of the hottest upcoming films, with footage and trailers often shown there before they are released online.

A-list stars and directors were on hand to reveal what to expect.

From the Avengers to Ariana Grande and Val Kilmer's AI, here are some of the top films and what happened at the event.

"Doctor Doom" is near

Disney unveiled the first full trailer for the highly anticipated next Avengers film, "Avengers: Doomsday," at the close of the conference on Thursday.

The clip offered the first look at Robert Downey Jr., who played Iron Man in 2019's "Avengers: Endgame," as the new masked villain, Doctor Doom.

The latest film, set to be released on December 18, brings together a host of old and new Marvel characters.

The trailer showed a fight between Gambit and Shang-Chi, played by Channing Tatum and Simu Liu respectively, as well as Patrick Stewart reprising his role as Professor X from the X-Men. "Something is coming, something we may not be able to stop," he warns.

Chris Evans returns as Steve Rogers, also known as Captain America, before Thor, played by Chris Hemsworth, as the Norse god's hammer Mjolnir flies into the former's hands.

On stage, Evans told the CinemaCon audience: "I said I'd only come back for a real reason. And in 'Doomsday,' there's a very real reason why these heroes need Steve Rogers."

Tom Cruise back in the "Top Gun" cockpit

Tom Cruise is returning in "Top Gun 3," Paramount announced.

The sequel to the 2022 blockbuster "Top Gun: Maverick" is "officially in development, with the script already well underway," Paramount's Josh Greenstein said at the convention.

The previous film grossed $1.5 billion worldwide, giving cinemas a much-needed boost as audiences began to return after Covid.

Cruise was at CinemaCon earlier this week to preview a very different film, "Digger," in which he plays a gray-haired oil baron who has to clean up his "environmental mess."

Christopher Nolan presented footage from "The Odyssey"

Christopher Nolan returns this year with his first film since 2023's "Oppenheimer," which won an Oscar for Best Picture.

"The Odyssey," adapted from Homer's ancient Greek poem, will star Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, and Zendaya, and Nolan showed a key part of the film with the Trojan Horse at CinemaCon.

This section was not released online, but a trailer had been released earlier.

Chalamet and Zendaya return in the "action-packed" "Dune: Part Three"

The stars of "Dune," including Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, and Jason Momoa, were present to introduce a seven-minute opening scene from the third film in the epic franchise.

Director Denis Villeneuve was also present, saying that "Dune: Part Three" is more of a thriller than the first two parts. "It's more action-packed, faster, and more emotional," he said.

A Variety reporter who was at the screening agreed, saying that "the events become brutal, loud, and deadly, fast."

A trailer was released last month, and the film is set to be released on December 18 – yes, the same day as "Avengers: Doomsday," setting up a heavyweight box office battle.

Val Kilmer "resurrected" by artificial intelligence

Val Kilmer was cast in "As Deep As The Grave" before his death last year, but was never able to film his scenes.

So the filmmakers used artificial intelligence to resurrect him – with the blessing of his family – and have now revealed the results in the first trailer.

In it, he is depicted as a Catholic priest of various ages in the American West, with Kilmer's digital clone crouching and somewhat eerily telling a child, "Don't be afraid of the dead, and don't be afraid of me."

The detail and imagery are convincing, but have heightened concerns among some in Hollywood about AI's potential to replace actors on a broader scale, the publication notes.

James Bond will return "when the time is right"

Courtney Valenti, head of Amazon MGM Studios, told fans about the progress of preparations for the next era of James Bond.

The answer is slowly.

Fourth Paddington film confirmed

The humble marmalade-loving bear is gaining momentum. After three hit films and a West End musical that won at the Olivier Awards last weekend, a fourth big-screen outing was confirmed at CinemaCon.

Details are still scarce, but Studiocanal executive Anna Marsh promised that "world-renowned comedy writers" would be involved.

Reckoning comes in Sorkin's "The Social Network" sequel

Sixteen years after "The Social Network," which depicted the birth of Facebook, a sequel will explore the 2021 Facebook leak by whistleblower Frances Haugen.

Aaron Sorkin, who wrote the screenplay for the previous film, is in the director's chair for "The Social Reckoning," and an impressive cast includes Mikey Madison, Wunmi Mosaku, and Jeremy Strong as Mark Zuckerberg.

"There is no life untouched by the Facebook algorithm, and that impact has shaped everything. So it's time to say more," Sorkin said at the event.

The trailer has not yet been released publicly, but was shown exclusively to audiences at CinemaCon. The film is scheduled for release in October – "the perfect time to be number one in the next awards season."

Michael B. Jordan in "The Thomas Crown Affair" remake

Pierce Brosnan starred in the 1999 art-house film "The Thomas Crown Affair," which itself was a remake of the 1968 film of the same name.

Now, Michael B. Jordan, fresh off his Oscar for Best Actor for "Sinners," is starring in and directing an updated version of the film for a new generation.

The trailer first showed CinemaCon audiences Jordan in the film alongside co-stars Adria Arjona, Lily Gladstone, and Aubrey Plaza.

Colleen Hoover adaptation by Dakota Johnson and Anne Hathaway

The film adaptation of Colleen Hoover's novel "It Ends With Us" was a box office hit in 2024, even if it is now more remembered for the feud between Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni.

Another Hoover novel, "Verity," is now being adapted into a film starring Dakota Johnson, Josh Hartnett, and Anne Hathaway.

The story follows a struggling writer who is hired to complete the remaining books of an author who was involved in a mysterious accident, and whose secret unfinished manuscript may reveal important clues.

Sequels, more sequels

"Toy Story" is already in its fifth installment, and charming footage was also shown at the conference of Woody and Buzz Lightyear battling over who can save the toys from digital extinction – in the form of a new threat, Lilypad.

Voice actors Tom Hanks and Tim Allen took the stage in Las Vegas and acknowledged that it had been 30 years since the first film. "We watched a video of us filming the first one – we look like our grandchildren," Allen joked.

Elsewhere on Thursday, Johnson (again) and Queen Latifah showcased footage from their upcoming Disney films, a remake of "Moana" and "Ice Age: Boiling Point," respectively.

Disney also showed clips from "The Devil Wears Prada 2," with Meryl Streep reprising her role as the icy fashion editor Miranda Priestly.

And director Jon Favreau presented the opening scene of his new film, the latest "Star Wars" work, "The Mandalorian and Grogu."
