The first supertankers passed through the Strait of Hormuz on Saturday after the announcement of a truce between the United States and Iran. According to ship tracking systems, three very large crude carriers (VLCCs) passed through the strait – Serifos under the Liberian flag, and Cospirl Lake and He Rong Hai under the Chinese flag. They passed through a trial anchorage in the Strait of Hormuz, which bypasses the Iranian island of Larak.
Each of these vessels is capable of carrying up to two million barrels of oil. The Serifos tanker, which is carrying crude oil loaded in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates in early March, is heading to the Malaysian port of Malacca, where it is expected to arrive on April 21. The other two tankers are carrying Iraqi and Saudi oil and were chartered by Unipec, the trading arm of China's Sinopec.
