Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico announced a telephone conversation with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, admitting that he had received a "reprimand" from her, and even in an emotional atmosphere. Later on Facebook, Fico explained what he meant about this conversation.
UNN reports with reference to TA3 and Robert Fico's FB page.
Ursula scolded me terribly, terribly. Robert, what have you done, why did you even negotiate with Trump like that? She scolded me for half an hour, said I was a complete idiot
Later, in a social media post, he explained that the way he initially explained the conversation with the head of the European Commission at a press conference on Monday was irony.
I hope that the President of the European Commission understood the joke from today's press conference, when I told journalists that the President of the EC terribly scolded me for not doing anything, as the Slovak opposition claims, to prevent the US from introducing new tariffs against the whole world. I am afraid that the Slovak media and the opposition did not understand the joke.
Context
Von der Leyen and Fico discussed the tariffs that US President Donald Trump plans to introduce for Europe, which could also affect Slovak industry.
Fico warned that on April 2, Slovakia and the entire European Union will face a "big surprise", hinting that it concerns trade measures by the United States.
These measures will have three key aspects:
- new tariffs on all goods and services from the European Union;
- a change in standards that could complicate exports from Europe;
- stricter terms of the US tariff policy for individual sectors.
Slovakia, according to Fico, is most interested in what the US tariff policy will look like for automobiles, the pharmaceutical industry and semiconductors.
Reminder
The European Union is considering the possibility of using Ukrainian underground gas storage facilities to resolve the dispute between Ukraine and Slovakia over the loss of gas transit revenues. Ukraine will import gas from Greece and Turkey.
