Australia's coal and gas exports cause more climate damage than any other country except Russia. By 2035, emissions from Australia's fossil fuel exports could increase by 50%.

Russian LNG is exacerbating the climate crisis by contributing to the overall global climate catastrophe. According to a new study, Australia's coal and gas exports cause more climate damage than any other country except Russia.

Russia is at the top of the anti-rating of countries that pollute the environment as a result of energy exports. Australia's coal and gas exports cause more climate damage than any other country except Russia. This is stated in a new study commissioned by the Australian Institute of Human Rights at the University of New South Wales.

The report says that Australia's fossil fuel exports will remain at roughly current levels until at least 2035 as the country continues to approve new coal and gas export projects.

Emissions from Australia's fossil fuel exports totaled about 30 billion tons of CO2 in the 63 years since 1961, and are projected to increase by 50% by 2035.

The country continues to follow this path despite being more vulnerable to the effects of the climate crisis than most other countries.

"We have domestic targets [to reduce emissions], but nothing on exports. We export 91% of our coal and about three-quarters of our gas, and we have no plans to give up that trade. The Australian public deserves to know the truth about this and the implications for us," said Dr. Gillian Moon, Climate Accountability Project Manager at the Australian Human Rights Institute.

The report also states:

Australia's fossil fuel exports in 2023 are likely to result in 1.15 billion tons of CO2 emissions - almost three times more than was emitted domestically.

In 2022, the country was responsible for 52% of global metallurgical coal exports and 17% of global steam coal exports. Metallurgical coal is used in steel production, while steam coal is used in electricity generation.

In the five years to 2020, Australia has more than doubled its liquefied natural gas export potential, increasing it by 62 million tons per year.

Only 19% of the gas produced in Australia is used domestically. The rest is either exported or used as energy for export industries.
