China has significantly reduced the supply of semiconductors to the terrorist country after the introduction of new US sanctions aimed at stopping the circumvention of restrictions. According to the U.S. Department of Commerce, from January to May 2024, the supply of advanced components and microelectronics through Hong Kong that could be used for the Kremlin's military needs fell by 28%.
Excluding Hong Kong, transit shipments of similar goods through China decreased by 19%. The United States considers Hong Kong and mainland China to be important global hubs through which Russia obtains materials for its military industry.
Earlier, the US State Department and Treasury included a number of companies around the world on sanctions lists for supplying goods that could be used in the war against Ukraine. The restrictions included, in particular, shell companies in Hong Kong specializing in the sale of semiconductors.
A representative of the U.S. Department of Commerce noted that the reduction in illegal flows was the result of active actions by the U.S. authorities and cooperation with manufacturers whose products are smuggled across the border.
