On May 21, 2026, Orthodox Christians will celebrate the Ascension of the Lord. This day holds special spiritual significance for believers, as it symbolizes the completion of Jesus Christ's earthly journey after the Resurrection and His ascension into heaven. Many ancient traditions, folk omens, and prohibitions observed by our ancestors are associated with the Ascension, and UNN will provide more details about the history of the holiday.

When the Ascension of the Lord is celebrated in 2026

The date of the holiday changes every year, as it depends on Easter. Ascension is celebrated on the fortieth day after Christ's Resurrection. In 2026, Orthodox Easter falls on April 12, so believers will celebrate the feast of the Ascension of the Lord on May 21.

Furthermore, in Christianity, the number 40 has a special meaning. It is repeatedly mentioned in Holy Scripture and symbolizes spiritual purification, testing, and preparation for a new stage.

History of the holiday, or why the Ascension has special significance for Christians

The Ascension of the Lord is dedicated to the events that took place after the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ. According to biblical accounts, after His resurrection, the Savior remained on earth among people for forty more days. He appeared to His disciples, spoke with them, supported them, and strengthened the apostles' faith after the events they had endured. During this period, Jesus Christ taught His followers, explained the meaning of God's word to them, and prepared them for their future ministry.

For Christians, this became confirmation that the resurrection was a true miracle and that Christ had indeed conquered death. According to tradition, on the fortieth day after the Resurrection, Jesus gathered the apostles on Mount Olivet near Bethany. There He blessed His disciples and ascended to heaven to God the Father. This very event became the basis for the great church holiday. The Ascension of the Lord symbolizes not only the end of Christ's earthly life but also the hope for spiritual salvation and eternal life. In Christian tradition, it is believed that after the Ascension, Jesus did not leave people but continues to be spiritually present with believers. After the apostles witnessed the Ascension, they returned to Jerusalem. It was there, a few days later, that the descent of the Holy Spirit took place—an event that Christians today celebrate as Trinity Sunday or Pentecost.

By the way, in ancient times, Ascension was considered a special day when the heavens seemed to "open" for human prayers. That is why people tried to spend this day in peace, prayer, and good deeds.

What traditions exist on Ascension

In Ukraine, the feast of the Ascension has long combined church traditions and folk customs. On this day, people went to church for the festive service, prayed for the health of their relatives, and asked God for protection and blessings.

Special attention was paid to helping those in need. People believed that on Ascension, the Lord might walk the earth in the guise of a traveler, a beggar, or even an animal in need of help, so refusing to help was considered a great sin.

Maiden rituals were also associated with this day. Unmarried girls braided young birch branches into a plait or a wreath. It was believed that if the branches did not wither by Pentecost, the girl might get married this year.

Our ancestors also believed in the healing power of the morning dew on Ascension. People washed with it for health, and herbalists collected medicinal plants during this period.

What not to do on the Ascension of the Lord

The feast of the Ascension is considered a day of spiritual purification and peace, so several important prohibitions are associated with it.

On this day, it is not recommended to engage in heavy physical labor, cleaning, or household chores.

It was also considered undesirable among the people to quarrel, use foul language, or refuse to help people.

Hunting was a separate prohibition. Our ancestors believed that on this day, one must not cause harm to any living thing.

Also, on Ascension, it was advised not to throw trash out of the house or spit on the ground, as this was considered a sign of disrespect for the holy day.

Folk omens for Ascension

Many weather and household omens are associated with the Ascension of the Lord.

People used to say: if it is sunny and warm on the holiday, such weather may last until autumn. Rain on Ascension was considered a bad sign and could portend a poor harvest or illness.

There was also an interesting omen about an egg laid by a hen on this day. It was hung under the roof of the house as a talisman against misfortunes and troubles.

In addition, people believed that sincere prayer on Ascension has special power, and requests made on this day from a pure heart can truly come true.
