"Iran is activating several thousand advanced domestic centrifuges in response to a resolution backed by the United States issued on Friday by the board of governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and handed over by the United Kingdom, France and Germany," Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said.

The corresponding statement about "several thousand modern Iranian centrifuges" that will be put into operation was posted on the sidelines of the 10th World Forum of the UN Alliance of civilizations (UNAOC) in the Portuguese city of Cascais.

The resolution, presented by the European troika - Great Britain, France and Germany - together with the United States, accuses Iran of refusing to cooperate with UN nuclear surveillance. The text of the resolution was adopted on Thursday, last week, despite opposition from about half of the Council's member states: 19 votes in favor, 12 against and three abstained.
