The United States, Germany, and Hungary remain skeptical about the possibility of inviting Ukraine to join NATO. This was announced by President Volodymyr Zelensky during a press conference, reports UNN.
"On 3-4 (December – Ed.) there will be a meeting at the level of Foreign Ministers of the Alliance. I do not know what can be there, the window will open, the window will close. There have already been so many of these windows, to be honest. It depends on the partners, they know our position. We would like recommendations from foreign ministers, but there are no illusions. There are those very skeptical countries, the United States is currently on the list of this skepticism. I do not know if the current President Biden will recommend this, but I know the vision in principle, as far as I know, of Secretary Blinken, he is more positive. But there is also the German side, there is also the Hungarian side, so only a consolidated signal can be positively perceived by all leaders," Zelensky said.
However, he noted that this is not the last opportunity to invite Ukraine to join NATO.
"In any case, we can count on the next steps, if there is a political will. The current US government has two months, and they have influence on those few European skeptics about our future," Zelensky said.
The president also noted that does not see any risks and most NATO countries do not see any risks from recommendations regarding Ukraine's positive future membership in NATO.
"It's not even an invitation. These are recommendations of foreign ministers regarding the future invitation of Ukraine to NATO," Zelensky said.
Reuters reported with reference to a letter from Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiga in which he called on NATO to invite Ukraine to join the Alliance at a meeting to be held next week. The invitation should be the Allies ' response to the constant escalation of the war unleashed by Russia.
