Egypt has prepared a new plan for a ceasefire between Hamas and Israel. Cairo proposes a mutual exchange of hostages and prisoners and a three-week "ceasefire". This was reported by UNN with reference to the Wall Street Journal.

Details

According to Egyptian representatives, Israel, which helped formulate the proposal, has pledged to begin long-term discussions if Hamas releases the first group of 20 hostages during the truce.

At the same time, the plan stipulates that Hamas must release children, women, including military personnel, and the elderly in need of urgent medical care.

They will be exchanged for about 500 Palestinian prisoners held in Israel. The transfer is to be followed by a 10-week ceasefire, during which the two sides will continue negotiations, and at least 300-400 thousand Palestinians currently living in Rafah will be able to return to their homes in other parts of the Gaza Strip.

In addition, the Israeli military will withdraw from the corridor separating the north and south of the enclave, but will still control the movement of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

Addendum

The publication notes that the move is Egypt's latest effort  to resume fruitless negotiations that lasted about five months amid Israeli plans to launch an assault on the city of Rafah.

It is noted that at present the Israeli authorities are under internal pressure due to protests by relatives of the hostages. The protesters demand that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu prioritize the release of prisoners before continuing the military operation.

At the same time, far-right representatives of the government are in favor of continuing the war.
