Ukraine does not export electricity due to deficit - Hrynchuk

Deputy Energy Minister Svitlana Hrynchuk emphasizes that Ukraine cannot export electricity because all of the country's available energy resources are used to meet domestic needs due to a shortage.

She said this in an interview with Obozrevatel, UNN reports .

Mr. Hrynchuk emphasizes that the energy sector is under constant enemy attack. “Since the beginning of March this year, Russia has destroyed more than 9 GW of our generation.

All available capacities of domestic power plants are currently operating exclusively to cover domestic consumption, and therefore no electricity is exported outside Ukraine. Electricity cannot be exported when there is a deficit in the energy system. We do not export electricity to Romania, Moldova or any other country. On the contrary, we import electricity every day, and sometimes we also receive emergency support from neighboring European countries: Poland, Slovakia, Romania, Hungary, and Moldova

- She says.

Hrynchuk notes that, unfortunately, the media often manipulates information about technical flows between the Ukrainian and EU energy systems, although this is a common physical phenomenon. She emphasizes that the Ukrainian energy system is integrated with the European grid. When systems such as the Ukrainian, Moldovan, Romanian, Hungarian, Slovak, and Polish are interconnected, technical flows occur between them.

This is a natural phenomenon caused by the laws of physics. However, these flows are insignificant, and the hourly balance is always close to zero: as much as goes abroad, the same amount immediately returns to Ukraine. Some people mistakenly or deliberately confuse these technical flows with commercial exports, not understanding how the unified energy system works

- added the Deputy Minister of Energy.

Hrynchuk also urged to make sure that there are no exports from Ukraine on the ENTSO-E website, in the Scheduled Commercial Exchanges section on the Border - Country tab, it is clearly visible that no electricity is sold from Ukraine, as all indicators are “0”. She also noted that information on daily interstate export and import auctions is available on the European JAO platform.

Ukraine does not sell electricity abroad, as our power system is in daily deficit. Now, power engineers are working almost around the clock to restore and rebuild the lost capacities where possible. But once again, 9 GW of generating capacity was lost due to the destruction. For comparison, the entire country of Switzerland consumes this amount, even slightly less. Or, also for comparison, it is like 9 nuclear units (the largest nuclear power plant in Europe, Zaporizhzhia NPP, occupied by the enemy, has 6 units, that is, it is like 1.5 ZNPPs). To restore this amount of generation, it will take years of intensive work to rebuild the destroyed facilities and build new ones

- Hrynchuk says.
