Context
Following İmamoğlu's imprisonment, demonstrations against the government have been taking place in Turkey for the fifth consecutive day. These are the largest protests in Turkey in over ten years. The new rallies and wave of outrage were preceded by a Turkish court's decision to imprison, on corruption charges, President Erdoğan's main political rival - Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu.
Despite his arrest and suspension, İmamoğlu was officially elected as the presidential candidate of his left-nationalist CHP party. This was reported by AFP.
The CHP suspects political motives behind İmamoğlu's arrest. The government denies this and emphasizes the independence of the courts. İmamoğlu considers the accusations against him to be a smear campaign.
İmamoğlu's supporters called for renewed protests on Monday evening.
