US President-elect Donald Trump is personally calling senators to press for the confirmation of former US House member Matt Goetz as US Attorney General, citing senators who have spoken to Trump, Axios reports, UNN writes.
Details
"Trump is making an effort on his controversial nominee, and sending an unequivocal message to Senate Republicans that he is waiting for his confirmation," the publication points out.
"He clearly wants Matt Goetz. He thinks Matt Goetz is the only person who will really have the fearlessness and the ferocity to do what needs to be done at the Justice Department," said Republican Senator Kevin Kramer, who received a call from Trump.
"One thing about Donald Trump is that people should never confuse his support for one of his candidates as a tactical or strategic tool for someone else," Kramer said. - "And at least up to this point, he's putting his own political capital into it.
"And he's a pretty convincing guy," Kramer said.
Another senator also confirmed to Axios that Trump had reached out to them, urging them to rally around him.
Meanwhile, the U.S. House of Representatives Ethics Committee is debating whether to publish its report on sexual harassment allegations against Goetz.
Several House lawmakers have suggested that even if the House Ethics Committee does not release the report - and Republican Speaker Mike Johnson is in favor of keeping the report private - it is likely that it will be leaked to the press.
Getz denies wrongdoing.
According to the newspaper's estimates, "Goetz may lose only three votes to be confirmed in the House.
At the same time, the publication calls it unlikely that any Democrat will support the controversial lawmaker. Democratic Senator Dick Durbin said that Goetz is "the least qualified and most radical person ever nominated for attorney general." The Florida Republican, who abruptly resigned his seat in the House of Representatives last week, will need to win over some lawmakers he has openly criticized in the past, the newspaper writes.
