The blockbuster about the American physicist and "father of the atomic bomb" Robert Oppenheimer was nominated for an Academy Award in 13 categories. The film won seven statuettes, including Best Director, Best Film Score and Best Film Editing.
Irishman Cillian Murphy, who played the lead role, won the Oscar for Best Actor.
Robert Downey Jr., who played Lewis Strauss, chairman of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission, won the award for Best Supporting Actor.
The world premiere of the film took place in July 2023, the same month it was released. By February 2024, the film had become the highest-grossing biopic in history, grossing $958 million.
"The Opener" has won five Golden Globe Awards - for Best Picture, Director, Soundtrack, Performance by a Leading Actor in a Motion Picture - Best Supporting Actor. The film also won seven BAFTA awards and three Screen Actors Guild Awards.
