The European Commission fined Google €890 million for violating the Digital Markets Act. The company was found guilty of promoting its own services in search results and restricting developers on Google Play.

The European Commission fined Google a total of 890 million euros for violating the Digital Markets Act (DMA). The company was found guilty of promoting its own services in the search engine and restricting the capabilities of app developers in Google Play. This was reported on the website of the European Commission, writes UNN.

Details

The European Commission adopted two separate decisions. The first provides for a fine of 460 million euros for giving preference to its own services in Google Search, the second – 430 million euros for violating the rules regarding the operation of Google Play.

According to the Commission's findings, Google violated the requirements of the DMA because its own services, in particular Shopping, Hotels, transport and sports services, received more favorable placement in search results than similar offers from third-party companies.

Google also violated the rules of Google Play

The European Commission found that Google restricted app developers from informing users about alternative, often cheaper, ways to purchase digital goods outside of Google Play, in particular through their own websites or other app stores.

The regulator also concluded that the amount of Google's commissions and the period of their collection for attracting new customers went beyond what is allowed by the Digital Markets Act.

With the adopted decisions, the European Commission obliged Google to stop the violations and bring its activities into compliance with the requirements of the DMA.
