European Union member states increased imports of Russian gas last year by 18% compared to 2023. This is reported by Tagesschau, reports UNN.

Details

According to media reports, gas purchases from Russians, despite the sanctions imposed due to military aggression against Ukraine, were increased by Italy, France and the Czech Republic.

European Commissioner for Energy Dan Jørgensen criticized the behavior of EU members. "Continuing to buy fossil fuels from Russia and thereby indirectly replenishing Putin's military budget is absolutely inappropriate. Since the beginning of the war, we have spent an amount equivalent to the cost of 2,400 F-35 fighter jets on fossil fuels from Russia," he said.

The European Commission is expected to present a roadmap in the near future on the phasing out of fossil hydrocarbon imports from Russia.

Recall

After the full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, the EU imposed numerous sanctions against Russian energy sources such as coal and oil. At the end of 2024, Ukraine stopped the transit of Russian gas to the countries of the European Union through its territory.
