The West Finland Coast Guard has reported increased interference with GPS navigation in the Archipelago and Åland Sea areas. This was reported by Yle, according to UNN.
Details
According to the Deputy Commander of the Coast Guard, Pekka Niittylä, the source of the signal jamming is located in Russia. He noted that the purpose of such actions is to protect critical Russian ports, which have recently been subject to attacks from Ukraine.
"Interference occurs especially in the open sea. In the inner archipelago, the impact of the interference signal is smaller due to the terrain,"
According to him, previously such cases were mainly recorded in the Gulf of Finland, but now they are being observed much further west—as far as the Åland Islands.
The Coast Guard warned that jamming complicates the operation of GPS receivers on boats and ships and may also affect other electronic systems. The greatest difficulties arise for large vessels, while on small boats the impact is less noticeable due to the lower placement of receivers. Shipowners are recommended to use paper nautical charts and be prepared to navigate using radar.
