When asked whether Rubio would pressure Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov during tomorrow's meeting, the Secretary of State replied: "I don't know if 'pressure him' is the right term here. We are going to discuss it. You know, obviously, the war in Ukraine, in my opinion, has largely prevented Russia and the United States from finding common ground on other issues."
That doesn't mean we won't try to find other areas of potential cooperation, but at the same time, you know, we would like this war to end. We believe it would be good for Russia if this war ended. So we will raise this issue. And, as I said, the United States remains open and ready to play a constructive role in ending this war, if such an opportunity arises. And it may arise, you know, we are ready for it, ready to play that role, because we believe that now, and I think the Russians will agree with this - we are probably the only country in the world that can play this role in trying to bring an end to it
He added that negotiations between the United States and Russia have not made significant progress in recent months, but "perhaps now new conditions have emerged that will allow this conversation to take place, and this is one of the issues we will consider tomorrow."
