Starting Tuesday, July 16, cars with Belarusian license plates will not be able to enter the European Union through Latvia's border crossings with Belarus and Russia. This was reported by Delfi , UNN .
Details
The newspaper notes that this decision was made in accordance with the legal acts of the EU and the European Commission as part of the eighth sanctions package against Russia, which also provides for restrictions on Belarus.
It is noted that from July 16, 2024, persons are prohibited from crossing the territory of Latvia in a vehicle registered in Belarus, as "it is prohibited to import from Belarus such goods that allow Belarus to diversify its sources of income, so that the country can participate in Russia's aggression against Ukraine." Therefore, such a person would have to return back to the country from which he or she wanted to leave for Latvia.
If he or she refuses to comply with such instructions, in particular, the customs authorities may confiscate the vehicle.
However, the ban will not apply to vehicles used by diplomatic or consular institutions.
Recall
The Latvian government has approved a €303 million plan to strengthen fortifications along its eastern border with Russia and Belarus as part of a joint Baltic defense line.
