"The government has decided to develop a state plan for the Fens deposit, which contains rare minerals. This is happening at the request of the Nome municipality," the statement says.

Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre said it was an important decision.

"The Fens deposit can be of great importance for Telemark, Norway and European supply security and competitiveness. The deposit has the largest documented rare earth deposit in Europe. To ensure access to critical minerals in the future, it is important to increase production both in Norway and in other countries with which we cooperate in the field of security. This can also create jobs and new industry in Telemark. Therefore, it is important to maintain a good pace of development of the Fens deposit," the prime minister said.

The deposit is reported to contain, among other things, the rare earth elements neodymium and praseodymium, which are used in powerful magnets. Access to such magnets is important for maintaining strategic value chains for Europe and the West.
