Ukraine, together with partners, is deploying a network of small and medium-sized cogeneration. The Mini-CHP project will be implemented in 32 cities, UNN reports with reference to the Ministry of Community Development.

Details

According to the agency, cogeneration is the simultaneous generation of electricity and heat at heat supply companies.

Cogeneration plants generate electricity primarily for their own consumption. This allows cities to have uninterrupted heat supply in the event of emergency or planned power outages. In addition, the electricity generated by the plants can be supplied to the grid for other consumers, which can reduce the deficit in the power system during peak hours.

So far, 80 cogeneration units have been distributed to enterprises in 21 regions of Ukraine, including heat supply companies in Chernihiv, Chernivtsi, Donetsk, Khmelnytsky, Cherkasy, Poltava, Mykolaiv, Kirovohrad, Rivne, Vinnytsia, Zaporizhzhia, Zhytomyr, Kharkiv, Volyn, Kherson, Lviv, Kyiv, Dnipro, Ternopil, Odesa, and Sumy regions.

"A heat supply company in Kharkiv region received 6 CCGTs in March. After the shelling of the region's energy infrastructure on 22 March, all the units continued to generate heat and electricity to supply critical infrastructure and the needs of consumers in apartment buildings. Thus, distributed generation is a powerful tool to increase the resilience of district heating systems and support the integrated power system of Ukraine. We are grateful to our partners for their consistent work to ensure the stable operation of critical infrastructure facilities," said Oleksandr Kubrakov, Deputy Prime Minister for Recovery of Ukraine.

A total of 91 cogeneration units were purchased for 32 Ukrainian cities and two universities.

The commissioning of all units, ranging in capacity from 50 kW to 1500 kW, will ensure stable heat supply for more than 1 million residents of apartment buildings and about 1000 social facilities, regardless of scheduled or emergency power outages.
