Lithuania is taking measures after the damage to underwater cables in the Baltic Sea

The Ministry of Defense of Lithuania announced the strengthening of security measures in the Baltic Sea after the detection of damage to underwater communication cables. This is reported by UNN with reference to the statement of the department.

Details 

As indicated by the Ministry of Defense of the country, the Lithuanian authorities are closely cooperating with their partners and are ready to provide all necessary assistance to Finland and Estonia in the investigation of the damaged electric line EstLink 2 and three severed data transmission cables.

Since the start of the incidents and damage to the underwater infrastructure, the Navy has increased surveillance and patrolling in the Baltic Sea.

It is noted that as incidents recur, additional measures will be taken to increase the security of critical infrastructure and resilience to hybrid threats.

"When we received information about new incidents in the Baltic Sea related to the violation of critical infrastructure, we ensured a quick exchange of information with our allies in the Baltic and Northern European countries and were ready to take additional security measures if necessary," said National Defense Minister Dovile Šakalienė.

Since the beginning of these incidents, the Lithuanian Armed Forces have increased surveillance and patrolling in the Baltic Sea. We are ready for any scenario. The protection of maritime infrastructure remains a priority. We will support the initiatives of Estonia and Finland to strengthen protection

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte reported on the social network X after a conversation with Finnish President Sauli Niinistö that NATO will strengthen its military presence in the Baltic Sea after the damage to the underwater cables.

Earlier, after the damage to the communication cable in the Baltic Sea, Finland began an inspection of the oil tanker Eagle S, which is called part of Russia's "shadow fleet" that helps Moscow circumvent sanctions on oil sales. Eagle S sailed under the flag of the Cook Islands from one of the Russian ports and was carrying oil to Egypt, according to the media.
